History
For over
twenty years Newspapers In Education, local businesses, organizations,
and individuals have been providing area classrooms with the Temple
Daily Telegram as a supplement to classroom curriculums. The
Newspapers In Education program has been a vital link between schools
and an important source of information - the daily newspaper.
Through the Newspapers In Education program, area students from Kindergarten
through High School use the newspaper to enhance a variety of subjects
including basic reading and letter recognition to economics, history,
geography, grammar, and math. Very young students search out and
circle the letters of their name on the front page, math students
learn to calculate averages using sports page statistics, and high
school economics students learn to live on a budget using classified
and sales ads for jobs, housing, food, and transportation.
Involvement
From September
through May the Newspapers In Education program also provides monthly
tabloids to classrooms on various subjects. Titles for the 2008-2009
supplemental materials include "Art in Earth" and "Buggin".
Each tabloid is chosen to coincide with a specific monthly event
such as Literacy week in September, Geography Awareness in November,
and the Holiday season.
The Newspapers In Education program also sponsors the annual Golden
Apple Awards. These awards are a way to support local teachers by
recognizing teaching excellence by encouraging students and former
students to write a short essay about a teacher who has impacted
their life in a positive way.
Newspapers In Education has also been sponsoring the annual Bell
County Spelling Bee for over twenty years. Students from all Bell
County public and private middle schools are invited to participate
in the contest each spring. The coveted "Traveling Trophy",
awarded to the winning school, currently resides at Bonham Middle
School.
Each Autumn, Newspapers In Education sponsors the "Tribute to
My Hero" essay contest. All students in grades 3 through 12
are eligible to send in an essay that details a person in their life
whom they consider a real hero.
The Newspapers In Education coordinator also conducts tours of the
Telegram facility for school groups or organizations and is available
to give presentations for individual classrooms, organizations, or
school wide programs.
