ST. GEORGE, Utah — Third-seeded Chipola (Fla.) scored at least two runs in three innings Thursday and defeated Temple College 7-3 in the second round of the NJCAA Division I softball national tournament.

The sixth-seeded Lady Leopards (47-10), who defeated Chipola in last year’s title game to earn TC’s first national championship, were scheduled to play an elimination game versus Tyler late Thursday night. The result was not available by deadline.

Chipola (49-5) scored three runs in the top of the first Thursday before TC — a winner over Chattanooga on Wednesday — answered with two on an RBI single by Savanna Parker and Madilyn Weatherly’s RBI ground out in its half of the opening frame.

Chipola posted two runs in the third and two more in the fifth to extend its lead to 7-2. The Lady Leopards got one back in the sixth on Ava McCoy’s RBI single.

Breanna Hernandez took the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits. She struck out five and walked three. Taylor Gruell tossed the final two innings for TC, which got two hits apiece from Alyssa Escamilla and Tiler Noyola among eight overall.

Chipola’s Amy Woodham (four innings) and Bria Bailey (three innings) combined to strike out seven, and Mikay Lewin when 3-for-4.
