Belton beats Heights

HARKER HEIGHTS — Belton rolled to a 10-4 victory over Harker Heights on Tuesday night to remain unbeaten in District 12-6A play. No other information was reported.

The Tigers (20-4-1, 10-0) host Killeen at 7 p.m. Friday.

COPPERAS COVE — In the only event final at the varsity level at the District 12-6A meet Tuesday, four Belton runners punched their tickets to the area meet with top-four finishes.

Natasha De La Rosa was second in the girls 3,200 meters with a time of 12 minutes, 39.10 seconds, finishing just ahead of third-place teammate Jordan Jones (12:44.16). In the boys race, Brysin Minosky (10:30.02) was second, and Eli Cable (10:32.59) took third.

The district meet continues today with varsity field events starting at 11 a.m. The running finals are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

The top four in each event earn a spot in the area meet.


Belton boys teams tied for 12-6A lead

after first round

WACO — Both Belton teams posted a score of 305 on Tuesday and were tied for the lead after the first round of the boys District 12-6A tournament at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.

Belton I and Belton II were ahead of third-place Hewitt Midway by 26 shots heading into today’s final round. Temple was fifth after a 369.

Dallas Hankamer of Belton I shot a 76 and held the lead in the individual standings. Trent Tepera (76), Nathaniel Woods (77), Peyton Woyek (81) and Preston Pratt (83) completed the card for Belton I.

Belton II teammates Blake Payne (74) and Hank Payne (75) were second and third, respectively, and A.J. So (78), Logan Hoelscher (78) and Ruffin White (82) rounded out the scoring for Belton II.

Temple was paced by Gage Garth (81), who was tied for 11th place, and Daniel Moon (84), Christian Yerkes (97), Andreas Schmidt (107) and Kevin Matamoros (109) completed the Wildcats’ card.

Belton medalist Cody Johnson (77) was tied for fifth.

The top two teams and top two players not on those teams qualify for the Class 6A Region II tournament.


UMHB women tie for first,

lose title on scorecard playoff

GEORGETOWN — Mary Hardin-Baylor shot a final-round 328 on Tuesday to tie Texas-Tyler for first place before losing the title on a scorecard playoff at the West Region Invitational.

The Lady Crusaders (315-328) and Patriots (319-324) posted matching totals of 643 in the six-team event at Berry Creek Country Club.

UMHB’s Olivia Robinson (74-83—157) finished second in the individual standings, one shot behind Southwestern’s Valentina Olivieri. The Lady Crusaders’ Victoria Gleghorn (81-78—159) was fifth, and Jade Ming (81-82—163), Annie Hasselbach (79-94—173) and Cassidy Rawls (89-85—174) completed UMHB’s scoring.
