Temple City Council unanimously denied, 5-0, a preliminary plat for H-E-B/Market Place Subdivision on a 1.3-acre plot located at the intersection of 31st Street and Loop 363.The council approved the May 6 election ballot which includes member elections and city charter modifications.Temple Planning and Zoning Commission approved the H-E-B plat in December 1999 that includes the store's expansion into the neighboring Hartland Bank property that it owns. The council expressed concern over several issues including the extension's violation of city ordinances because it does not have public street access.Another consideration regarded how the shopping center parking lot would handle the increased traffic brought by a store extension. The plat had been repeatedly tabled at February council meetings at the company's request to give the firm the chance to meet Temple's requirements but the re-submitted plans were still found lacking by the city's staff. by Jonathan Walburgh Community members packed the cafeteria at Raye-Allen Elementary School Thursday to hear the district's plans for elementary restructuring and to voice their concerns.Parents offered input on a wide variety of topics at the last of three community forums including concerns over relocating students to different schools and on what type of magnet/academy program the district should provide."We moved from out of state and when we moved we looked at all of the different areas that the surrounding (school) environments provided within Belton, within Temple and within Waco," said Bettina Johnson. by Eric Guel | |
sportsLike the undermanned, but talented Temple swimming and diving team, the Wildcat track and field squad doesn't boast depth.Coach Rusty Hunter does have considerable talent among the ranks, which include 11 returning lettermen. But Temple's deficiency in numbers makes it a little harder to compete for team titles. But that won't stop Temple's athletes from making their mark in the individual races and events at today's Wildcat Relays. The 11-team meet, which includes Belton, Round Rock Westwood, Austin Reagan, Bryan, Waco University, Brownwood and District 8-5A rivals Killeen, Copperas Cove, Waco and Killeen Ellison, gets under way at 2:30 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium."We don't have the depth, but we're a senior-loaded team with a lot of talent," Hunter said. "We've seen some good things so far this year and I believe we're going to go out there and get our points today as well." by Tom Day
Two key members of the Temple High School girls' soccer team will be heading in opposite directions next fall, but both are moving up in the world.Parlaying their playing skills into collegiate athletic scholarships, seniors Katie Baldwin and Heather Seevers signed letters-of-intent to their respective college choices on Thursday
