Published: August 31, 2000
When the Temple tennis team steps on its home court for its season-opening match against Belton at 3:30 p.m. today, it'll be led by a name familiar to area sports fans. With today's match, Greg Hilley begins his first season as the Wildcats' coach, replacing A.C. Blunt. If Hilley's name sounds familiar, it's because he's the son of the late Dr. Lewis Hilley and the nephew of the late Gordon Hilley, two area coaching giants.Lewis Hilley started the men's athletic program at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in the early 1970s. He also served as UMHB's tennis and golf coach and coached at Lamar University prior to that. Gordon Hilley was the basketball and tennis coach at Temple High from the late 1940s to the late '70s. He later coached tennis at Temple Junior College.Greg Hilley, 53, comes to Temple with a rich tennis background. He played at the University of Florida, where he competed against Grand Slam tournament winners such as Roy Emerson, Manuel Santana and Stan Smith. by Greg Rajan
