Temple in control at district

Going into today's 1 p.m. District 13-5A swim meet finals, lack of confidence and momentum will not be a problem for Temple's boys and girls squads. Of the 24 events, Temple posted the fastest qualifiers in 11 trials Friday night in the preliminaries at the Hardin Swim Center. Temple's toughest opponent, Georgetown had 10 and Killeen tallied three. The top eight swimmers in each event qualified for today's finals. The top six will advance to the Region II finals Feb. 9-10 at the University of Texas in Austin. "We told all of our swimmers that you swim for place today. You swim for points tomorrow," Temple swim coach Terry Jones said. "We paced ourselves well tonight. We made sure we got where we needed to be." While Temple had more top qualifiers, Georgetown dominated the relays, by posting top times in four of the five events. The Temple boys claimed the top time in the 200 freestyle relay while Georgetown took the girls and boys 200 medleys and girls 400 freestyle. by Robert Hollier
