A few weeks back, we said we were close to finding out who would be the Tem-Cats' new basketball coach.Without further ado, we've confirmed that Crockett coach Don Layton will be introduced (and almost assuredly confirmed) as that person during the Temple school board's monthly meeting on June 11.Layton is a winner, having led the Lady Bulldogs to the Class 3A state playoffs the past four seasons. In tough Region III, the Lady Dogs have been competitive in the postseason, going three rounds deep this year, two last year and reached the regional semis in 1999 before losing to Smithville.In 1998, they lost in bi-district to Rusk, the same school that eliminated them in the regional quarterfinals last spring.Crockett schools Superintendent Dorman Jackson said Temple is getting a steal."You're getting our best," he said of Layton, who coached there six years, five as head coach. Whether you're a club pro or just enjoy an occasional round of golf, area golfers are encouraged to take part in the third annual Communities In Schools Ken Morgan Invitational Golf Tournament Monday, June 11 at Salado's Mill Creek Country Club.The entry fee is $90 per player or $180 per team for the two-man scramble event. The fee covers meals, green fees and cart. A cash prize of $300 will be awarded the the winning team.The tournament, named for longtime Temple High School golf coach Ken Morgan, raises money for Communities In Schools, a non-profit organization located in public schools and seven school districts that coordinates summer educational programs that help make children more successful in school.All proceeds will help fund many of these summer programs, such as Partners in Literacy, which helps teach parents how to improve their child's reading skills and educational involvement.
