TC's Tower, Irwin drafted

Temple College pitcher Caleb Irwin certainly wasn't disappointed he was taken in the 47th round of baseball's amateur draft on Wednesday. Instead, he had a much different reaction."I was sitting there following it on the Internet, and I just about fell out of my chair when I saw my name," said the right-handed Irwin, who was selected by the Kansas City Royals with the 1,393rd pick in the 50-round draft. "I didn't think I'd see my name."Irwin, the former Belton High School standout who had a successful freshman season as TC's closer this spring, doesn't expect to join the Royals' organization right away. He said it's likely he'll pitch for the Leopards next year and then sign with Kansas City, which will retain Irwin's rights for one year, prior to the 2002 draft.TC coach Craig McMurtry said he expects sophomore-to-be Brad Tower to follow a similar strategy with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who chose the left-handed Leopard pitcher in the 29th round on Wednesday."I'd definitely like to have them back, and I honestly feel it'll be better for them if they come back," McMurtry said. "It'll probably be a draft-and-follow situation for both of them." by Greg Wille
