Host Wildcats fare well at Winter Classic
Published: January 14, 2001
For most of the swimmers and divers competing at Saturday's sixth annual Wildcat Winter Classic, the meet gave them one last chance to let loose before the stakes go up in two weeks with district competition. And let loose they did. "It keeps it from being too serious and it lets you have fun," Temple's Drew Elwood said. "After this, it gets serious and it's elimination. At this meet, you let yourself go and have fun with it." Elwood had his share of fun at the Hardin Swim Center, taking first place in the boys 500 yard freestyle. Other Wildcat swimmers who took first in their races were Jeff Moltenberry (200 free) and Traci Westphal (50 free). For Temple coach Terry Jones, the meet was his last chance to see his charges compete before the Jan. 26-27 District 13-5A meet, which is also at Hardin. Jones liked what he saw Saturday. "There were some (things) that I was really pleased with," he said. "I saw kids step up and accomplish some things we need them to down the stretch. But there's a lot of things technique-wise that we can improve on. I think we got everything we wanted out of it. "The nice thing about this meet is it has the prelim-finals (format), but it doesn't have the pressure. I think a lot of kids relaxed. It is a good situation. It's fun and I think all the kids come here and have a good time and our kids look forward to it." By Greg Rajan
