Dynamic Duo: President, Williams cornerstones of Wildcats' hoops resurgence
Published: January 19, 2001
Fans and followers of the Temple boys basketball team recognize point guard David President and post Matt Williams as the program's cornerstone athletes. As two- and three-year varsity starters, respectively, President and Williams have been the driving forces behind Temple's recent re-emergence as a state power. Their combined leadership abilities, the statistics they've posted and the accolades earned during their careers have attested to that. But what some outsiders may not know about this Wildcat duo has perhaps been the biggest factor in the success of the team, which has jumped out to a 2-0 start in District 13-5A play and is 20-3 overall. "Matt and David are very tight off the court and have developed a strong friendship, which is probably more important to them than their relationship on the court," said Temple coach Bruce Etheridge, whose Wildcats travel to Waco for a 7:30 p.m. game today. "They're special kids." As team captains and experienced leaders, Williams and President have helped instill a confidence among the Wildcats that has spelled out to their No. 12 ranking in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' Class 5A poll. by Tom Day
