The United Way of Central Texas has almost reached its 2001 campaign goal, Executive Director Ann Thompson said Wednesday, raising $893,075, or 99.2 percent of the $900,000 goal. That amount is the second highest amount the local organization has raised; Mrs. Thompson said $903,000 was raised in 1993, short of that year's goal of $950,000.This year's amount is also the closest the campaign has come to its goal in several years.Last year, the campaign raised $859,012, or 97.6 percent of the $880,000 goal. The last year the campaign reached its goal was in 1997, when the $700,000 goal was exceeded by just more than $2,000, Mrs. Thompson said. Before that, the 1991 campaign exceeded its $825,000 goal with $856,000, the only other time in the 1990s when the goal was reached. by Anna Foster
