Cove hex intact vs.Tem-Cats; Lady Dawgs extend streak, win 54-49

For the Temple girls basketball team, The Streak lives on, in agonizing fashion.Copperas Cove, which had trailed almost the entire game, rallied past the Tem-Cats for a 54-49 win on Friday night at Wildcat Gym.The victory extended Cove's district winning streak over Temple to 10 games. The last time Temple beat Cove was on Jan. 16, 1997.With the win, Cove (13-7) improved to 3-0 in District 13-5A play and is tied with Georgetown (19-4, 3-0) atop the league standings. Temple (13-9, 2-1) dropped to third place."Our kids stepped up to the challenge and we make no excuses," Temple coach Don Layton said. "As a team, we didn't get the job done. A lot of little things couldn't have been different, but I'm proud of how we played and we'll regroup and we're going to get after people in the district."Temple was up 49-48 and looked like it had the victory sewn up with 27.1 seconds left after Cove's Lanedria Williams missed a 3-pointer and the Tem-Cats took possession. But Cove's Moneke Smallwood stole the ball from Temple's LaTanya Felder and nailed a jumper from the top of the key to put Cove up 50-49 with just over 20 seconds left."Unfortunately, we didn't handle the ball in the last 30 seconds," said Layton, whose team was minus two injured starters, point guard Kim Talley (wrist) and wing Courtney Crews (foot)."We've got a lot of young guards out there. We're not going to make excuses about it
