For some people, that's like Christmas in July.Just the same, the Temple Wildcats started full-pads spring football on Wednesday afternoon, the first of 18 practices the team plans to conduct over the next three weeks."The first day is always full of excitement," Temple coach David Beal noted. "Plus, the kids need some time to make the adjustment from shorts to pads, so we try to keep that in mind."Beal said he felt his team had a solid opening day, as coaches worked out approximately 93 of the program's 100 athletes.First-day workouts included individual, small group, full-contact inside drills, 7-on-7 drills, and team offense and defense.Three players, Cody Miller, Ronnie Gaines and P.J. Matamoros, have baseball commitments."I'm pleased with several things, especially the defense," Beal said. "They were flying around all over the place. We've reduced the number of defenses that we use, and they showed good concentration and commitment. The retention of knowledge was also good on both sides of the ball."Beal also cited several individuals for their efforts during first-day workouts. On defense, returning starters stole the spotlight as linebacker John Hamilton and defensive tackle Cedrick Parker made several key contributions.On offense, Beal the coach liked what he saw from son and starting quarterback David Beal. Charlie McRae also showed some hustle, the coach said.All Texas teams have the option to conduct an extra week of practice in the spring, but those that do are required by UIL rules to start fall practices a week later.
