Wind, lightning sneak up on Temple

Wind and powerful lightning bolts accompanied the thunderstorm that surprised Temple about 6:15 p.m. Saturday. Traffic lights were out in the city in several places. Leaves and downed tree limbs were plentiful. Winds from 33-44 mph were recorded at Draughon-Miller Central Texas Regional Airport. Although the airport showed only 0.20 of an inch of rain, a South Temple observer reported about 1.10 inches. The clouds came in shortly after 6 p.m. and by 6:45 p.m. the gusty wind was blowing sheets of water across South 1st Street. Visibility was low, causing one driver to slow to a speed of 5 mph.
