United Way kicks off effort
If meeting one-fourth of the goal on the first night of fund-raising is any indication of things to come, the United Way of Central Texas may have nothing to worry about. The Central Texas affiliate received $250,000 in pace-setter donations from local businesses and groups Tuesday night at the 50th anniversary celebration, jump-starting its campaign to raise $1 million by Nov. 1. Big donors included McLane Co. with $120,000, H-E-B of Temple and Belton with $52,000 and Wal-Mart Distributors with $29, 324.
