Wildcats hoping District 13-5A play brings more consistency, victories

The Temple Wildcats begin defense of their District 13-5A basketball title tonight. However, after winning only four of their first 20 games this season, how much of a defense they'll put up will depend on several factors."It will be quite a challenge (repeating) with the team we have this year," said Temple coach Bruce Etheridge, whose 4-16 team will begin district play at 7:30 p.m. today at 15-7 Copperas Cove."While we might not have enough experience to compete for another district championship, we're just hoping we can jell in time to make a run at the playoffs."The Wildcats head into district play having lost five straight. The losing skein began prior to last month's Round Rock Sunrise Kiwanis Holiday Classic, when they lost several players to injuries, suspensions and academics.Three consecutive losses in the Round Rock tourney were followed by defeats at Class 4A state-ranked Austin LBJ and Pflugerville Connally. It merely continued a bad dream for Etheridge, whose teams have won 57 games the past two seasons."We're banged up and beat up," Etheridge said. "We're finally get getting some kids healthy, and we're still capable of playing better. by Will Wright
