Residents respond to call for blood

Officials at Scott and White Memorial Hospital reported Monday that more than 100 people participated Saturday in the hospital's emergency blood drive.Cindy Glover, chief technologist for blood donor services, said that when she arrived at work Saturday morning people were lined up in the hallway. All seating in the hallway and in the waiting room was filled, she said."We collected 94 units Saturday," said Ms. Glover. "I estimate that 95 percent of the units drawn was type "O" blood.Hospital officials had reported Friday that the shortage of type "O" blood had reached emergency status. Two patients at the hospital recovering from surgery needed "O" type, they said."Most people who donated blood commented about the front page article in the Telegram," said Ms. Glover. "Others said that they got calls from their pastors. We are just thankful so many came in." by Harper Scott Clark
