Small-arms fire kills U.S. soldier

WASHINGTON (AP) A U.S. Army Special Forces soldier was killed Friday by small-arms fire during an ambush in eastern Afghanistan, the first American military death from enemy fire in the war against terrorism. A CIA officer was wounded but was expected to survive. Gen. Tommy Franks, commander of U.S. Central Command, said the casualties underscored the dangers faced by dozens of American special operations forces who are working with local Afghan fighters to coordinate the hunt for Osama bin Laden, his al-Qaida lieutenants and senior Taliban members. The Pentagon identified the soldier killed in the attack as Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Ross Chapman, 31, of San Antonio.
