Temple posts 2nd shutout, wins tourney

Playing two soccer games in one day isn't truly appealing. The Temple boys took advantage of that Saturday afternoon at the season-opening Temple Kickoff Showcase. The Wildcats mixed a strong defensive effort with potent scoring to record a 4-0 victory over Austin Westlake at Woodson Field. The game matched the 13-5A and 25-5A 2002 district champions. Earlier Saturday, Austin Westlake had defeated Waco Reicher 10-0, and the Chaparrals didn't show a lot of energy versus Temple in the afternoon."Maybe Westlake playing earlier today had something to do with the way they played," Temple coach Ciso Mosnia said. "But that's not to take away from anything we did. Westlake is a good team and they are pretty sound. We came with a lot of pressure at them and they started fading."Austin Westlake coach John Fitzsimons said Temple's physical play also factored into the outcome."We were a little tired," Fitzsimons said. "Temple's size, compared with ours, was also a difference in the game. And they were fresher than we were."Fitzsimons said he hoped Westlake wouldn't give up the game's first goal. However, in the sixth minute, Temple forward Nathan Henderson delivered a clean corner kick into the scoring box, which defenseman Shawn Hill lightly touched into the lower right corner for the score.Temple dominated the scoring chances in the first half. Henderson nearly scored on another corner kick five minutes after the Wildcats' first score. Scott Copeland delivered Temple's second and third goals, which effectively put the game out Westlake's reach. By Eric X. Viccaro
