sportsHATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Michael Griffin homered to give Baylor the lead in the seventh inning before the Bears blew open a tight game with five runs in the ninth and beat Southern 10-4 in an NCAA regional baseball game on Saturday.
The top-seeded Bears (43-22) advanced to the championship round and will play host Southern Mississippi (47-15) at 1 p.m. today. Baylor needs one win to reach the super regionals, while the Golden Eagles must beat the Bears twice in a row to win and advance. Southern Miss routed Southern 18-1 late Saturday to make it to the title round.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Martin Brodeur showed he’s not perfect, but the Anaheim Mighty Ducks still are in playoff overtimes — and that’s why they’re still alive in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Ruslan Salei scored off Adam Oates’ faceoff win at 6:59 into overtime to give the Mighty Ducks, who took advantage of one of the biggest misplays of Brodeur’s career, a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils in Game 3 Saturday night.
OK, I’ll admit the San Antonio Spurs looked anything but like a championship-caliber team in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals against the Dallas Mavericks. SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio Spurs star Tim Duncan doesn’t expect to see a lot of crazy defensive schemes from the New Jersey Nets in the NBA Finals.
Instead, he expects mostly man-to-man coverage from a player — Kenyon Martin — who has Duncan’s respect as one of the best defensive big men in the NBA.
DETROIT (AP) — Roger Clemens soon will join a club that might not admit any more members.
Clemens today will make his second attempt at career win No. 300 against the Detroit Tigers, a milestone only 20 pitchers have reached — and none have since 1990.
