United Way shortfall may cut funds
Published: January 25, 2003
United Way of Central Texas is just below the 90 percent mark of its $1 million goal, but the struggling economy that is shrinking donations may cause funding cutbacks for 25 nonprofit agencies in Bell County. Ten percent may not sound like a long final stretch, but a $100,000 shortfall can cost an agency salaries, funding for medical supplies and clothing for children and even after-school recreational facilities. One of the biggest misconceptions of United Way is that the money does not stay in the community but goes into a larger pot nationally, said United Way of Central Texas Executive Director Ann Thompson.
