Archives for Monday, December 1, 2003newsDONAHOE — There’s no such place as Donahoe anymore. There is Donahoe Road and Donahoe Creek, but the rest of the once-thriving community has been relegated to memory, legend and the Blackland soil on which it once thrived.
An old windmill and a cemetery (both on private land) along with a somewhat mysterious grave by the side of Donahoe Road in southeast Bell County are about all that’s left of Donahoe (pronounced “Dunnyhoo”).
The City of Temple will deck the halls and line the streets celebrating the holiday season Monday, Dec. 1, with the annual Christmas parade.
The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. and will head down Central Avenue going east from 25th Street past the Municipal building and ending at 4th Street.
Local and national heroes are set to participate in the Wall That Heals, a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, which will be at VFW Post 1820, 3302 Airport Road, Dec. 4-7.
Two color guards, an American flag that flew over Tikrit, Iraq, and a possible flyover by Huey helicopters are in the works.
(AP) — The Thanksgiving weekend gave the nation’s retailers a solid start to the holiday season, but stores that expected shoppers to have less interest in bargain-hunting were disappointed.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and other discounters had the strongest sales, attracting crowds with specials on TVs, DVD players and toys. Department stores and mall-based apparel retailers were discounting less than they did last year, and their business was uneven.
