Map puts some Democrats at risk

AUSTIN (AP) — With a federal court’s approval of a Republican-drawn redistricting map, congressional candidates are moving ahead with plans to run in Texas’ newly configured districts.

For some Texas Democrats in Congress, that means a potentially rough road ahead. They must decide whether to battle the odds in redrawn districts that are more Republican or that are shaped in a way that may allow a competing Democrat to win.

Republicans estimate the new boundaries could give the GOP as many as 22 seats in the state’s 32-member congressional delegation. Right now the partisan split is 16-16 after U.S. Rep. Ralph Hall of Rockwall switched to the Republican Party last week.

Barring a U.S. Supreme Court reversal of Tuesday’s redistricting ruling by a three-judge federal panel, here are seven Democrats who may be endangered:

U.S. Rep. Martin Frost of Arlington; U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards of Waco; U.S. Rep. Charlie Stenholm of Abilene; U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Austin; U.S. Rep. Max Sandlin of Marshall; U.S. Rep. Chris Bell of Houston; and U.S. Rep. Jim Turner of Crockett.
