Blackburn said Jackson wanted to pursue other opportunities.
“Evidently the ministry was one of those,” said Blackburn. “He had a close affiliation with the CME (Christian-Methodist-Episcopalian) church in Dallas. He did a great job for us and will be missed.”
City Council Mayor pro-tem Kathy Gilmore said Jackson, who is a licensed minister, expressed a need to spend more time with his church in Dallas where he holds a high position.
“It was like a second career to him,” she said.
Blackburn said he was sorry to see Jackson leave, since his contributions left the Killeen Police Department and the City of Killeen a better place.
Assistant Chief Dennis Baldwin will serve as interim chief of police, said Carroll Smith, spokeswoman for the Killeen Police Department.
She said Jackson left Tuesday without any advance notice or indication he was leaving. She said to her knowledge there was no interdepartmental politics involved.
