“Nobody knows.” “I have no idea.” “We just don’t know. Everything’s up in the air.” “With the UIL, they’ll do what they want to do.” “Every-body’s got an opinion.” “There’s a ton of possibilities.” “Nobody in the state has a clue except the guys at the UIL.”
Those comments, most of them accompanied by chuckles, came from area athletic directors and coaches when they were asked about the looming University Interscholastic League biennial reclassification and realignment.
It was the last game of the first half of conference play for the Temple College men’s basketball team. But was Saturday night’s meeting with Weatherford College just another game for the Leopards? No way.
Hungry to own a winning league record at the midway point of Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference play, Temple treated its clash against the Coyotes as a playoff game.
This season the Temple College Lady Leopards basketball team has become familiar with lopsided scores at halftime. Saturday’s game against Weatherford was no exception, but there was one major difference — this time it was the Lady Leopards who were trailing.
The Weatherford Lady Coyotes took advantage of 26 first-half turnovers by TC to roll to a 43-19 halftime lead and parlay that into an 82-66 victory at TC gym.
HOUSTON (AP) — If the Carolina Panthers win the Super Bowl, it will be with power. If the New England Patriots win, it will be with finesse, deception, intimidation and experience.
So while today’s NFL championship game might not feature football’s biggest stars, it could be a fascinating chess match between two of the game’s headiest coaches — accomplished grandmaster Bill Belichick of New England and Carolina’s quickly ascending John Fox.
HOUSTON (AP) — The stirring comeback and spectacular escape were unneccesary this time around. John Elway and Barry Sanders were elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame without a sweat.
As expected, two of the NFL’s most dominating and exciting players made it in Saturday on their first attempt.
DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Mavericks apparently thought the game was over. Except Denver never gave up despite being down by 20 points.
Carmelo Anthony hit the go-ahead 22-footer with 2:22 left, then the rookie added four straight free throws in the closing seconds to help the Nuggets finish one of their biggest comebacks ever, 107-102 over Dallas on Saturday.
ALPINE — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor basketball teams came away with somewhat surprising results against Sul Ross State on Saturday.
The UMHB men mounted a furious second-half comeback to hand the Lobos their first American Southwest Conference West Division loss of the season, 82-75.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The Central Texas Blackhawks used the shots of Alekcei McAvoy and Derek Hansberry along with the glove of goalie Tyler Chestnut to edge the Fairbanks Ice Dogs 3-2 in a shootout late Friday night at Big Dipper Ice Arena.
After a scoreless overtime, McAvoy and Hansberry converted on shootout goals for the Blackhawks, who had previously gone 0-for-15 on sudden-death attempts. Chestnut blocked four of five shots to pick up the victory.
