Crusaders top Lobos, 82-75; UMHB women fall, 72-64

ALPINE — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor basketball teams came away with somewhat surprising results against Sul Ross State on Saturday.

The UMHB men mounted a furious second-half comeback to hand the Lobos their first American Southwest Conference West Division loss of the season, 82-75.

Brandon Gatlin and Michael Blaylock fueled the Crusaders by pouring in 17 points each. Justin Hejl added 16 points and 10 rebounds. The win also broke Sul Ross’ six-game winning streak.

In the other contest, the UMHB women had their three-game winning streak snapped as the Lady Lobos took advantage of 20 free throws en route to a 72-64 win over the Lady Crusaders.

Jennifer Gilchriest paced UMHB with 23 points and nine rebounds. Lisa Martinez added 13 points for the Lady Crusaders.

The Crusaders improved to 12-6 overall and 4-3 in ASC West play while the Lady Crusaders fell to 11-7, 4-3.

After playing seven of their last eight games on the road, the two squads return home to Mabee Gym on Thursday to host Howard Payne — the start of four consecutive home games. The women begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men at 7:30.
