The Smurfit-Stone Temple location Monday referred questions to corporate headquarters.
Lisa Esneault, corporate communications manager with Smurfit-Stone in Chicago, Ill., said Monday the Temple plant closure is a company-wide effort to cut costs in response to market conditions. The Temple site is a sheet plant and is part of the corrugated container division.
Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation has announced it will discontinue operations at its Anderson, Ind., and San Jose, Calif., corrugated container plants and at sheet plants in Temple and in Louisville, Ky.
“The decision to close these plants is a very difficult one. However, we must embrace the realities of today’s economy and deal with them accordingly,” said Jim Davis, vice president and general manager for the corrugated container division, in the statement.
“Current market conditions dictate the need to continue to optimize our physical assets and human resources in order to enhance services for our customers and improve operating cost efficiencies,” he said.
