Four candidates file in District 31: Three Republicans, one Democrat set for congressional primaries

With the filing deadline over and the U.S. Supreme Court refusing Friday to block the GOP-redistricting map from taking effect, the candidates and lines for District 31 are set for the March 9 primary elections.

U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, retired Army Lt. Col. Wes Riddle of Belton and former Air Force Capt. Dirk Armbrust of Rosebud, filed for the Republican primary.

Austin lawyer Jon Porter of Cedar Park was the lone Democrat to file for the new District 31.

For a while it seemed as if the Democrat party would not field a candidate in the heavily-Republican district, until Porter, 33, in a Wednesday interview with the Temple Daily Telegram said he was 99.9-percent certain he would run. A Democrat has represented the area in Congress for as long as anybody can remember.
