Flag casing precedes 1st Cav deployment

FORT HOOD — 1st Cavalry Division pulled out all the pages from the protocol manual Tuesday when it cased its colors for deployment to Iraq.

The parade and ceremony called on the traditions of the U.S. Army in a colorful display rarely seen except in times of deployment in time of war.

About 5,000 troops assembled on Cooper Field arrayed by brigade, battalion and company for inspection by Maj. Gen. Peter J. Chiarelli and his reviewing party on horseback.

After a presentation of roses to Mrs. Chiarelli, a playing of “Charge” and “Gary Owen” by the 1st Cavalry Band, and a presentation of officers and colors followed by Honors to the Nation, 1st Cav commander Chiarelli addressed a crowd numbering about 1,500.

He said they had witnessed an historic event as once again 1st Cavalry cased its colors for combat.

Chiarelli said he had recently visited the 2nd Brigade Combat Team that deployed during December.

“They set a standard in keeping with the wearing of the patch,” said Chiarelli referring to the division’s distinct emblem of a horse head on a shield. “I can report without a doubt, they are ready.”

He said the comment he heard the most as he met with the soldiers and their leaders was how much they appreciated the care given in making their deployment from Fort Hood a memorable experience.
