State leaders to meet, discuss school finance

AUSTIN (AP) — The state’s top three elected officials will meet Thursday at Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst’s Hill Country ranch in an attempt to find common ground on school finance and taxes.

Dewhurst, Gov. Rick Perry and House Speaker Tom Craddick will meet at the Snaffle Bit Ranch near Fredericksburg, an Austin newspaper reported in Tuesday’s edition.

The three Republicans have not always found common ground during their first year together.

A new way to finance schools in Texas probably will be the subject of a special legislative session this spring, but Perry has said he won’t call the session until an agreement has been reached. A plan is not likely to emerge from Thursday’s discussion.

“It’s more team-building,” said Kathy Walt, Perry’s spokeswoman.

Only the three leaders and their chiefs of staff will attend. Craddick, of Midland, will leave Thursday night. Perry and Dewhurst will stay until Friday.

In recent weeks, legislators have been taking testimony on school finance. Staffers are preparing reports on topics such as tax options and ways to improve public education.
