Blackhawks slip past Ice Dogs in shootout

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The Central Texas Blackhawks used the shots of Alekcei McAvoy and Derek Hansberry along with the glove of goalie Tyler Chestnut to edge the Fairbanks Ice Dogs 3-2 in a shootout late Friday night at Big Dipper Ice Arena.

After a scoreless overtime, McAvoy and Hansberry converted on shootout goals for the Blackhawks, who had previously gone 0-for-15 on sudden-death attempts. Chestnut blocked four of five shots to pick up the victory.

Central Texas (14-19-5 for 34 points in the North American Hockey League South Division) overcame a 2-1 deficit with a goal from Josh Joles in the third period to force overtime.

Jake Sparks got the Blackhawks on the board first with a goal to start the second. The Ice Dogs (20-10-8 for 48 points) followed up with two consecutive goals to take a brief lead.
