Homeless aid initiative gets $24,000

Local families in need of a little help got a boost Wednesday in the form of a donation from United Way of Central Texas to Family Promise.

The $24,000 United Way donation to Family Promise of East Bell County was presented during a ceremony at Fire Station No. 2.

Family Promise is an organization seeking to alleviate homelessness among families and support the families in achieving self-sufficiency.

The city of Temple, through the Bell County HELP Centers, recently leased Family Promise Inc. the fire station, which is no longer in use by the city, for $1 a year.

The fire station will be used for daycare and a home base where case management services will be provided to participants.

While there, the families will be able to pursue employment, shower and do laundry.

The fire station also provides guests with a mailing address and a base for housing and employment searches.
