A concerted recruiting effort during the last five years has helped the Central Texas chapter of the Texas Association of Sports Officials stave off the drought of football officials that often plague many chapters.

Kenny Kelarek, the active president of the local chapter, likes the depth that his organization has developed, giving it the appropriate experience for all levels of competitive football at 47 area schools. With the advent of Killeen schools now playing sub-varsity games on the once-taboo Wednesday night, there is a need for officials at least five nights a week.
