With efforts already under way for immediate aid to victims of Hurricane Katrina, the Temple/Belton area is preparing for refugees to come to Central Texas, Ken Higdon, president of the Temple Chamber of Commerce, said at a Friday press conference. Various community leaders reported on food drives, housing/shelter developments, education and job posting options.

The average price of regular gasoline in Temple continued to skyrocket Friday with $2.92 per gallon the average in a survey of 11 stations the Temple Daily Telegram has been checking for several months. That represents an increase of 30 cents per gallon since Wednesday and an increase of 43 cents since last week.
