Gas station clerk found dead Thursday; Temple Police seek help apprehending suspect

Edward Girard, 33, of Temple, a clerk at the Diamond Shamrock Corner Store at 1st Street and Avenue H, was shot to death in an apparent robbery of the store about 4:50 a.m. Thursday, Lt. Rick Ashe of the Temple Police Department reported.

Responding to a call of shots fired, officers found Girard dead inside the store. An unknown amount of money was taken, Ashe said. Police are investigating the case as a robbery and murder, he said.

Justice of the Peace David Barfield pronounced Girard dead at 7:58 a.m. and ordered an autopsy in Dallas. Barfield said Girard possibly lived alone. Attempts to find any next of kin have been unsuccessful.

The Corner Store is open 24 hours a day, Ashe said. One source said several women clerks work in the store. Ashe said no one else was in the store when police arrived.

Police are asking anyone who might have seen something at the busy intersection to call the department at 298-5500.
