Temple men arrested in store murder: Suspects held on capital murder charges

Temple police arrested two men late Friday morning in connection with the Thursday shooting death of Diamond Shamrock clerk Edward Girard, Lt. Rick Ashe of the Temple Police Department reported.

Belton police detained Robert Lee Herring, 23, and William Darnell Venable, 21, both of Temple, at a store in Belton, and Temple officers picked them up, Ashe said. The two suspects were being booked into the Bell County jail Friday afternoon on charges of capital murder.

Girard, 33, of Temple received a fatal gunshot wound to the head during a robbery of the Diamond Shamrock Corner Store at 1st Street and Avenue H about 4:50 a.m. Thursday. Responding officers found him dead inside the store. An unknown amount of money was taken.

Justice of the Peace David Barfield said the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and that the manner of death was a homicide, in a preliminary autopsy report from the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.
