SALADO - Firefighters spent about five hours Sunday squelching a 500-acre scrub brush fire in Salado next to the northbound side of Interstate 35 between Amity and Tahuaya roads.

No injuries or structure damages were reported as about 50 firefighters from seven different departments worked to put out the fire. Officials said the cause of the fire was unknown.

The fire started at Amity and Fox roads and then spread toward I-35. It took out mostly grass, cactus, mesquite and hackberry trees and some fences. Firefighters got word of the fire around 1 p.m. and controlled hot spots until about 6 p.m.

Traffic stalled on both sides of the interstate in the area.

Kaci Tomlin, 21, of Little River Academy heard the crackling of the fire and saw flames when she was visiting Landon Kleypas, 20. The two called 9-1-1 and said the fire departments responded within 15 minutes.
