Temple tax rate hearing slated today

The Temple City Council will conduct the second of two public hearings on its proposed 57.34-cent tax rate per $100 valuation during a special meeting at 5 p.m. today in Council Chambers of the Municipal Building.

The council will consider adopting a resolution authorizing right of way acquisition consisting of strips of land within 13 tracts abutting Hilliard Road and two on Old Waco Road for the Outer Loop project encompassing Old Waco Road south of FM 2305.

The 2006-07 proposed budget was initially prepared on a tax rate that was 2.99 percent over the effective tax rate, which resulted in a preliminary tax rate of 58.55 cents per $100 evaluation. The Bell County Appraisal Office calculated a final effective tax rate of 55.68 cents. The decrease in the effective tax rate resulted in a decrease of the preliminary rate from 58.55 cents to 57.34 cents, which is 2.98 percent above the effective tax rate.

The proposed tax rate is .11-cent change from the current year tax rate of 57.45 cents.

The 57.34-cent proposed tax rate is comprised of interest and sinking rate of 23.39 cents and maintenance and operation rate of 33.95 cents.
