But in the second half, the teams reversed roles, with the Greyhounds struggling to muster any offense, allowing the three-touchdown lead to disappear.
In overtime, Boerne recovered, scoring a touchdown when quarterback Mike Green found Cutty Young from 21 yards out in the second overtime to rescue a 27-24 victory.
With the first possession of the second overtime, the Tigers marched to first-and-goal at the 3-yard line. But three straight runs - one each by quarterback Trevor Alaniz, tailback Keith Daniels and fullback Oscar Moctezuma - went for a total of two yards. Belton settled for an 18-yard Garrett McLaughlin field goal and a small lead.
Belton coach Jay Warrick said the decision not to try to punch it in was an easy one. After rushing for 60 yards in the first half, the Tigers had run for 119 since and had limited Boerne to just 71 second-half rushing yards. The Greyhounds ran for 214 in the first half.
And sure enough, the Belton defense clamped down on the run on the first two plays, stuffing Green on his first two rush attempts. But the senior quarterback, who finished 7-for-10 for 67 yards, found Young for the second time in the game.
