Kyle residents take to stairs

A Temple Housing Authority official said a pair of Kyle building elevators that malfunctioned late last week, forcing able-bodied residents to use the stairs and others to rely on assistance, were still being repaired on Wednesday evening, but repairmen were planning to continue work through the night until the elevators were fixed.

Formerly the Kyle Hotel, the Kyle building houses elderly, disabled and low-income residents for the housing authority.

Carrie Kline, grants director for the authority, said that late last week the first of the two elevators servicing the 13-story Temple Housing Authority building broke down and a part was ordered for repairs. But delivery of that part was delayed due to winter storms up north, she said. Then on Saturday the second elevator also quit working because of an unrelated problem. A replacement part was also ordered for that elevator.

Ms. Kline said the parts for the elevators arrived on Wednesday and workers were busy making repairs.

With both elevators out of service many residents found themselves using the stairs to come and go. Others with special needs are either simply staying in their apartments, or if they need to get out, are getting assistance from housing authority staff members, Ms. Kline said.
