The latest storm system, expected to drop several inches of snow in West Texas, left some cities scrambling to restock sand and de-icing chemicals nearly depleted after combatting icy roads that closed schools and canceled hundreds of flights across Texas this week.
Forecasters predict that the Austin and Houston areas will be spared another strong winter mix. But the north and western half of the state, essentially from Big Bend to Dallas, will likely begin freezing by Friday.
