UMHB touts planned doctoral program

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is recruiting students for a doctoral program 162 years in the making.

The first students working on a doctorate in education are scheduled to start this fall and the program leaders paid a visit to the Temple school district Thursday evening to generate interest.

As of now, if one wants a doctorate in educational administration it means traveling to Tarleton State University in Killeen, Baylor University in Waco or the University of Texas in Austin.

Dr. Marlene Zipperlen, dean of the UMHB school of education, said that they chose education as the subject of their first doctoral program because UMHB has always had a strong commitment to teaching teachers, and a doctorate program is a natural progression from their roots. She said the advantages to their program are proximity, smaller classes and a class schedule that favors working administrators.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools will meet in June to decide whether to offer accreditation to UMHB
