KILLEEN - The body of Izaiah Conway, a two-year-old boy missing since Friday on Fort Hood, was found in Killeen Sunday washed up on the north bank of Nolan Creek just 1,500 feet shy of the Harker Heights city limits.
Initial indications are that the boy fell into Nolan Creek behind his home in Pershing Park - a military housing development on Fort Hood - and drowned, said Col. Diane Battaglia, director of public affairs for Fort Hood.
BELTON - An overnight fire Sunday at Sparta Elementary in Belton forced school district officials to notify parents and teachers that classes will be shifted to the District Educational Development Center this morning.
Schools spokeswoman Judy Owens said that the fire, which started in a bathroom that connects to two classrooms, caused smoke damage throughout the school.
BELTON - It should become clearer this week how the federal government mandate for Texas to return $288 million in transportation funding may affect projects underway or planned in Bell County, according to TxDOT Spokesman Ken Roberts.
The Texas Transportation Commission announced last week that as a result of the mandate five funding categories would be slashed, including $100 million from the National Highway System, $71 million from interstate maintenance and $24 million from bridge projects.
