But for Salado to run-rule the Wildcats a second consecutive night is downright “unimaginable.”
The Eagle offense exploded for the second night in a row for an 11-1, five-inning win in a Class 2A area-round battle at Nelson Field. Entering the series, the Eagles had never beaten the Wildcats in three previous playoff meetings.
“I would have taken two wins any way whatsoever,” said Salado coach Melvin Bates, whose 25-7 team beat Weimar 12-1 in five innings Thursday. “It’s unimaginable to run-rule them two games in a row. It feels super to finally put them out for once.”
Sam VanHoozer (6-2) stymied the Wildcat bats as the Eagle bats exploded - namely Kevin Jackson, who went 4-for-4. Seth Collins had two hits and scored five times, while Tanner Myers and Matt Fritsch each had multi-hit games for Salado.
“We’ve had to rely on our pitching quite a bit this year,” Bates said. “For our bats to come alive at this point in the season is icing on the cake - especially against a team like Weimar that pitches so well.”
The Eagles (25-7) reached the Region IV quarterfinals for the second straight year and will play a series next week against No. 2 Trinity or Hallettsville.
