TCU clips Baylor in regional opener; Rice, Texas, A&M grab Game 1 victories

HOUSTON (AP) - Andrew Walker and Bryan Kervin homered in the seventh inning to lead Texas Christian to a 3-2 win over Baylor in Game 1 of the NCAA Tournament’s Houston Regional on Friday.

Walker snapped a 1-1 tie with his 12th home run of the season, hitting it off Bears starter Jeff Mandel (7-8), who pitched 6 1/3 innings.

One out later, Kervin sent Mandel’s 2-1 pitch over the wall in right-center field for a two-run lead.

Baylor’s Beamer Weems led off the top of the ninth with a homer.

Sam Demel (7-1) pitched the final three innings for the win. After the Bears loaded the bases with two outs, Demel struck out Ben Booker to end the game.

The Horned Frogs (47-12), the regional’s No. 2 seed, took a 1-0 lead in the fourth without collecting a hit.

Tonight TCU will play No. 1-seeded Rice (50-12), whose Owls are seeded second nationally. Baylor (34-26) will play No. 4 seed Prairie View A&M (34-24) in an elimination game at 2 p.m. today.

Rice 5, Prairie View A&M 0

HOUSTON - Tyler Henley hit a two-run home run and Matt Langwell pitched seven scoreless innings as Rice opened by blanking Prairie View A&M.

Langwell (7-1) struck out eight and allowed four hits for the Owls (50-12), which took advantage of six errors by the Panthers (34-24).

Rice’s Bobby Bramhall pitched two innings of one-hit relief, striking our four of the seven batters he faced.

Prairie View starter Matthew Chase (10-2) held Rice scoreless for five innings after giving up Henley’s sixth homer in the first. But two throwing errors in the seventh scored Jordan Dodson and Brian Friday.

Friday’s sacrifice fly in the eighth scored Aaron Luna.

ROUND ROCK REGIONAL

Texas 8, Brown 2

ROUND ROCK - Kyle Russell hit his 28th home run of the season and Chais Fuller’s two-run homer in the sixth inning erased a 2-1 deficit as the top-seeded Texas Longhorns beat Brown in their regional opener.

Texas (45-15), the region’s top seed and the No. 5 national seed, advanced to today’s 6 p.m. game at Dell Diamond to play UC-Irvine (41-15-1), which whipped Wake Forest 13-0.

After starter James Russell allowed seven hits and two runs in four innings, relievers Joseph Krebs (9-1) and Randy Boone pitched a combined five innings of scoreless, four-hit relief. Krebs earned the win.

The Longhorns added a run in the seventh and four in the eighth and finished with 16 hits against the Bears (27-20).

Brown starter Jeff Dietz allowed 14 hits and five runs in seven innings.

COLLEGE STATION REGIONAL

Texas A&M 7, Le Moyne 2

David Newmann struck out nine over seven innings as Texas A&M beat Le Moyne.

Making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2004, top-seeded Texas A&M (45-16) stole eight bases to give the Aggies a Big 12-record 147 steals on the season.

Newmann (11-1) allowed six hits and gave up one run in helping break Le Moyne’s 10-game winning streak. Le Moyne (34-18) hasn’t won in the tournament since 1989.

The Aggies roughed up Dolphins starter Bobby Blevins (9-3) early. Ben Feltner and Blake Stouffer reached on singles in the first inning, then scored on a two-out single by Craig Stinson.

Blevins settled down for the next two innings before Texas A&M scored three more runs in the fourth, all with two outs. Parker Dalton’s single scored Kyle Colligan, and Dane Carter later followed with a single that scored two more.
