Fred S. Groseclose

A memorial service for Fred S. Groseclose, 86, of Temple will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple with Chaplain Ralph McCulloh officiating.

Mr. Groseclose died Wednesday, July 4, at a Harker Heights nursing home.

He was born in Marion, Smyth County, Va., to Hugh C. and Angela Ewald Groseclose. He attended school in Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a survivor of Pearl Harbor, having been stationed at Schofield Barracks. He trained members of the 42nd “Rainbow” Division and then served with the 34th “Red Bull” Division in Italy until the end of World War II. He graduated from William and Mary College in 1950 and began working for the American Red Cross Service to military installations in March 1951. He served with the 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division in Korea, and in Japan in December 1952. He received the Medal of Freedom. He returned to Korea in 1953 with the Red Cross International Team visiting POW camps and assisting with the Prisoner of War Exchange at the end of the Korean War. He was assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo and Amarillo Air Force Base. He served with the 1st Infantry Division in Lai Khe, Vietnam; and the 2nd Field Forces and the IV Corps in the Delta. He was promoted to Field Director III at Fort Hood. His last assignment was at Osan Air Force Base in Korea. He was a volunteer at the Bell County Chapter of the Red Cross and at the Olin E. Teague Veterans Center in Temple. He worked at the Leon Valley Golf Course in Belton from 1985 to 1994. He was a member of the American Legion, Elks Lodge and the Toastmasters. He married Vera Arlene Fife on Feb. 4, 1956, in San Angelo. She preceded him in death.

He is survived by his son, Larry E. Groseclose of Temple.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross.
