STILLHOUSE HOLLOW DAM - A truck driver distracted by looking at Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir lost control of a tanker truck carrying sewage and wrecked on the dam Tuesday morning.
By late afternoon, FM 1670, which crosses the dam, remained closed to through traffic as tow trucks worked to right the Mack truck and tanker owned by S&M Vacuum and Waste of Killeen and crews worked to clean the road.
ROCKDALE - The state is expected to begin buying right-of-way next year for the two-lane, $50 million U.S. Highway 79 bypass around Rockdale. The plan is getting mixed reviews in this Milam County city of 5,440.
“I think that everyone is pretty much resigned to the fact that it´s going to happen,” Rockdale Chamber of Commerce President Denice Doss said. “Businesses are nervous about it because we don´t know what will happen to drive-through business when we don´t have as much drive-through traffic.”
The Texas Transportation Com-mission approved $320,000 in funding that will eventually lead to the runway being extended at Draughon-Miller Central Texas Regional Airport.
The funds from TxDOT´s Aviation Facilities Grant Program will be used for land acquisition.
WASHINGTON - The House voted overwhelmingly Tues-day to make lawmakers disclose more details of their efforts to fund pet projects and raise money from lobbyists, responding to a rash of recent scandals.
The Democratic-drafted legislation followed cases that sent two GOP lawmakers and a big-time lobbyist to prison and saw a House Democrat charged with bribery.
CHICAGO - Children in some Army families are vulnerable to abuse and neglect by their mothers when their fathers are away at war in Iraq and Afghanistan, a large Pentagon-funded study finds.
Mothers were three times more likely to have a substantiated report of child mistreatment when their soldier husbands were deployed than when the fathers were home, according to the research. Mothers at home were nearly four times as likely to neglect their children and nearly twice as likely to physically abuse them during deployment periods.
BELTON - The dark green doors with chipped red accents that once welcomed visitors remain tightly sealed. Bits of duct tape spot the doors and remnants remain where other pieces have managed to escape. A small doll in a pink dress garnished with lace guards the building from her perch between the door handles.
The harsh yellow tape dissuades visitors from approaching the 133-year-old church.

ARLINGTON - The Texas Rangers made a number of moves last winter to try to be instant contenders. But the trades the Rangers completed before Tuesday´s non-waiver deadline now suggest a much longer timeline.
Unloading two of their biggest names, the Rangers dealt closer Eric Gagne to Boston and completed a deal to send first baseman Mark Teixeira to Atlanta. Rangers owner Tom Hicks told The Associated Press in an e-mail that Teixeira rejected an offer for an eight-year, $140 million contract extension made two weeks ago.
BOSTON - Kevin Garnett gives Boston a new Big Three that brings the Celtics much closer to what their old Big Three delivered - an NBA title.
The Celtics, who have 16 championships but have gone without one for more than two decades, obtained the former MVP and 10-time All-Star on Tuesday in a 7-for-1 deal - the NBA´s biggest trade for one player.
HOUSTON - The Houston Astros couldn´t pull off a blockbuster deal as the trade deadline passed on Tuesday, keeping their bullpen intact and holding on to productive infielders Mike Lamb and Mark Loretta.
The one move they made was a bonus - the San Diego Padres took Morgan Ensberg for cash or a player to be named later. The Astros designated the slumping Ensberg for assignment on Sunday and they had 10 days to either trade Ensberg or waive him.
ATLANTA - Mark Teixeira didn´t even play, and already he´s earning credit for the Atlanta Braves´ power game.
Kelly Johnson had four hits, including two homers, and Jeff Francoeur and Brian McCann also hit home runs to help the Braves welcome Teixeira back to town with a 12-4 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.
