The council could go into executive session during its meeting, beginning at 5 p.m. today in the Municipal Building, to discuss the city’s possible purchase of the Nadine Apartments, 212 E. Ave. A. The item is also set for discussion during a 3:30 p.m. workshop.
Although the 5,088-square-foot apartment building, constructed about 1925, had undergone a level of renovation in 2004, it did not materialize as an apartment complex for the investors, according to the city. The lenders foreclosed on the property and a local real estate agent is now marketing it.
In addition to its proximity to the police station, the dilapidated building is on the same block as the Bell County Annex building.
According to city staff, the council will likely discuss the option of purchasing the property and discuss possible uses for it.
City officials said possibilities for the building include relocating some city operations there, utilizing the site for economic development through a private entity or using the building for a social service agency.
The city could also demolish the building, along with another building on the adjacent lot that the city owns, to make way for future construction. The city acquired the second building as a donation about two years ago, according to City Manager David Blackburn.
According to officials, owners of the property approached the city to gauge its interest in taking the property.
The city is monitoring the building to ascertain that it does not deteriorate further. City code enforcement officials will have inspected the building by meeting time and will include information during the workshop.
In 2001 the land was appraised at $6,600 and the building at $48,279, according to figures from the city. In 2007, after renovations were done, the land appraisal stayed the same and the building was appraised at $84,166, city figures showed.
