SAN DIEGO - Rogers' Taylor Jungmann did his job, but his teammates failed when it mattered most.
The East All-Americans rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to top the West team 5-4 in the AFLAC All-American Classic at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Saturday.
Jungmann, a standout right-handed pitcher at Rogers High School, came in to pitch the fourth inning, with the West holding on to a 3-0 lead. He got Xavier Avery to ground out to begin the inning, then allowed a walk to game MVP Tim Beckham. But Jungmann delivered a pickoff to first and eventually tagged out Beckham in a rundown. After the next batter singled, Jungmann got out of the inning by striking out Destin Hood.
Down 4-2 entering the top of the ninth, the East posted three runs on three walks, two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly by Beckham, which proved to be the game winner. Beckham was 1-for-2 with a triple, a walk, two sacrifice flies and three RBI.
Reliever Jack Armstrong of Jupiter, Fla., son of former major league pitcher Jack Armstrong, pitched two scoreless innings with four strikeouts for the win. Aaron Hicks of Long Beach, Calif., allowed all three earned runs in the ninth for the loss, allowing the East to snap a three-game losing streak and win for only the second time in the five-year history of the event.
The AFLAC Classic is the nation’s premier high school baseball game, featuring the best 38 players in the country entering their senior year. Jungmann was selected for the team after leading the 36-2 Eagles to their first-ever state championship and earned the Class 2A Player of the Year honor. He was 13-0 on the mound with 142 strikeouts.
