Tem-Cats split on opening day

GRAND PRAIRIE - Temple rallied twice in its first match but never got on track in its second as the Tem-Cats opened their volleyball season with a split Tuesday night.

Temple erased an eight-point deficit in the fourth game of a 22-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-22 win over South Grand Prairie before getting swept by Keller 25-14, 25-12, 25-12.

“We were playing sluggish, but I was proud of the way we came back,” Tem-Cats coach Susie Hughlett said of the first match. “It shouldn’t have been that close, but it was. But that’s how first games go.”

Trenette Smith led the Tem-Cats with 19 kills and added six digs. Jordan Pickett had 11 kills to go with a team-high 14 digs and three aces. Katy Houchin had 20 assists and 10 digs.

“Passing is key. It always has been for us,” Hughlett said. “We were hit or miss in both matches, but we couldn’t get anything going in the second. It mystifies me that we couldn’t get it going, but on the bright side we know what we need to work on.”

Smith had 11 kills and five digs against Keller.

The Tem-Cats are back in action at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Saginaw Boswell tournament.
